Synopsis
Scottish casualties in the First World War 1914-1918) numbered nearly 135,000. As was the case in each country within the United Kingdom, officialdom was eager to create a long lasting memorial to those who gave their lives. In Scotland John George 8th Duke of Atholl led the drive for a Scottish Memorial the site of which was finally agreed upon as being Edinburgh Castle. The Memorial finally opened on the 14th of July 1927.
Ian Hay (the pen-name for Major H. Beith) published his book about how the Memorial came to be in 1931. In it he describes why a national memorial was felt to be necessary and then goes on to provide a full description of it and histories of the fighting units and soldiers commemorated within it.
There are 22 black and white plate illustrations of the architecture and sculptures within the memorial.

Condition Notes
A good condition book missing the original dustcover but with fine clean cover boards with debossed lion rampant vignette and gilt title on spine. Inside the pages are bright and clean throughout.
