  • Synopsis

The Scottish Secretariat was a mid-20th-century semi-official policy bureau and research organization associated with the Scottish nationalist movement. Its publications are exceedingly rare today due to small print runs and wartime paper restrictions, but they helped shape the intellectual framework of later Scottish National Party (SNP) policy culture.

This is publication No. 62 printed in 1955. Previous editions of this pamphlet were published in 1930 and 1945.  It provides a copy of the original 1707 Treaty of Union between Scotland and England and then the following appendices:

Appendix A - The Constitutional Significance of the Treaty of Union - these are extracts of considerations made by Mr. Douglas Young from Professor T. B. Smith's (Smith was Chair of Scots Law at the University of Aberdeen) book The United Kingdom - The Development of Its Laws and Constitution.

Appendix B - A Historian on the Old Scots Parliament.

Appendix C - Parliamentary History of Scottish Self-Government Bills.

Appendix D - Scotland's Revenue and Its Disposal
