  • Synopsis

There have been Three commissioned “ Statistical Accounts” relating to Scotland in the previous three centuries:

First (Old) Statistical Account - published 1791–1799.
Second (New) Statistical Account: Published 1834–1845
Third Statistical Account: Published from 1951–1992

In the words of the original commissioner of the first Statistical accounts Sir john Sinclair wrote: "by statistical is meant...an enquiry into the state of a country for the purpose of ascertaining the quantum of happiness enjoyed by its inhabitants and the means of its future improvement".

The county of Inverness was formerly the largest county in Scotland and included a considerable section of the Highlands and Islands including the southern islands of the Outer Hebrides. It is an extensive county encompassing a great variety of scenery and climate with originally Gaelic as the majority language. This account focuses on the declining fishing and crofting communities and the lack of opportunities for young people.
