Synopsis
There have been Three commissioned “ Statistical Accounts” relating to Scotland in the previous three centuries:
First (Old) Statistical Account - published 1791–1799.
Second (New) Statistical Account: Published 1834–1845
Third Statistical Account: Published from 1951–1992In the words of the original commissioner of the first Statistical accounts Sir john Sinclair wrote: "by statistical is meant...an enquiry into the state of a country for the purpose of ascertaining the quantum of happiness enjoyed by its inhabitants and the means of its future improvement".
Caithness is located in Scotland's furthest north-east and was traditionally a farming and fishing community. The construction of the Dounreay Nuclear plant in the mid 1950's reversed the population decline and had a major impact on the social and economic life of the county. Although the county of Caithness was eliminated under local government reorganisation in 1975 this account covers the original county area.
