Synopsis
Robert Henryson was a Scottish poet who lived in the 15th century, born in Dunfermline around 1425-1430, and died around 1506-1513. Very little is known about his life, but he is believed to have been a schoolmaster, possibly at the University of Glasgow.
Henryson's most famous work is "The Testament of Cresseid," a continuation of the story of Troilus and Criseyde by Geoffrey Chaucer. Other notable works by Henryson include "The Morall Fabillis of Esope the Phrygian," a collection of fables with moral lessons, and "Robene and Makyne," a pastoral romance.
Henryson's poetry is characterized by his use of allegory, his moralizing tone, and his skillful use of language and meter. He is considered one of the greatest Scottish poets of the Middle Ages, and his works have been influential on later poets such as Robert Burns and William Dunbar.
This edition comprises a new translation from lowland Scots by the iconic Irish writer Seamus Heney.
