In 1918, as the first World War was drawing to an end, the famous liberal industrialist Lord Leverhulme bought - lock stock and barrel - the Hebridean Isle of Lewis. His intention was to revolutionise the lives and environment of its 30,000 people, together with those of neighbouring Harris, which he shortly added to his estate. He intended to make Lewis and Harris the industrial miracle of the North with the intention of increasing the population to 200,000 and to turn the crofting community into tenured wage-slaves. They fought back and this is the story of that fight which resulted in land seizure, land settlement, a squandered fortune, a divided island and the ultimate defeat of one of the most powerful mean of the early 20th century.
