Synopsis
This book first published in 1950 claims it is a serious attempt based on wide research and practical experience to provide a wide and reliable work of reference for the identification of the traditional tartans and to establish a canon for their correct weaving.
The book first outlines the history of the use of tartans as well as discussing tartan designs and the distinguishing factors from one clan to another. This is followed by a clan-by-clan description of each tartan with notes on the source of the tartan and any special features of the design and what is known of its story. This second part of the book contains 22 full page colour prints each with 10-12 sperate strips illustrating the sett of each tartan. The word "sett" is used to denote the specific proportions and relative widths of colour.
The author Donald C. Stewart was the son of Donald William Stewart author of Old and Rare Scottish Tartans published in 1893 and was considered an expert in Tartan and clan history.
