  • Synopsis

John Duncan(1794-1881) was a self-taught Scottish botanist and handloom weaver whose life became one of the most remarkable stories of nineteenth-century natural history. Born in 1794 at Stonehaven, Kincardineshire, Duncan came from humble circumstances and received little formal education. Apprenticed as a weaver, he spent much of his working life at the loom, often in poverty, yet devoted his spare hours to the study of plants.

Developing an intense interest in botany in early adulthood, Duncan taught himself to identify, classify, and preserve native flora. He travelled widely on foot across eastern and central Scotland—particularly in Aberdeenshire and the Highlands—collecting specimens and corresponding with established botanists. Despite his limited schooling, his knowledge became highly respected among contemporary naturalists, and he built a significant herbarium noted for its accuracy and breadth.

Duncan’s life attracted attention for the contrast between his modest trade and his scholarly achievement. In later years he gained recognition from the scientific community and was granted a small civil list pension in acknowledgment of his contributions. His story became more widely known through the biography The Scottish Botanist; or, Memoir of John Duncan, Weaver of Stonehaven (1862) by the Rev. William Jolly, which portrayed him as an example of intellectual perseverance and devotion to science.

John Duncan died in 1881, remembered not only for his botanical work but as a symbol of self-education and quiet determination in Victorian Scotland.
