  • Synopsis

First published in 1681 "The Institutions of the Law of Scotland" by Sir James Dalrymple of Stair(later Viscount Stair) rapidly became and has remained , a foundation work of Scots Law. He humbly presented them to a wider audience beyond just Scotland, as laws in "a plain, rational and natural method...that a great part offered is common to most civil nations and is not likely to be displeasing to the judicious and sober anywhere."

The text in this copy is that of the 2nd edition of 1693, being the last to be corrected, revised, and enlarged by the author.

The editor, Professor David M. Walker adds a critical introduction on Stair's life and career, his sources and the genesis and plan of the work.
