This work deals with fifty-two painters whom the author, Edward Gage (then art critic of "The Scotsman" newspaper and a painter in his own right), felt at the time carried sufficient weight and originality on the contemporary art scene both nationally and internationally. The work of each artist is illustrated by a plate in colour or in black and white.
