Synopsis
The book's 400 or so poems, from more than 150 poets, span the entire century. All three languages of Scotland - English, Scots and Gaelic - are included. While such major figures as Hugh MacDiarmid, Sorley Maclean and Edwin Morgan are generously presented, readers will also find less predictable contributors, including the celebrated psychiatrist R. D. Laing and Robert Service.
The increasing prominence of women poets is one of the more notable features of this period. They are on show here, from Helen Adam, with her sexually charged ballads, to the accomplished East-Coast trio of Marion Angus, Violet Jacob and Helen B. Cruickshank, and such contemporary luminaries as Carol Ann Duffy and Liz Lochhead, who with others bring fresh themes and female perspectives to their work.
