Synopsis
An important historical work tracing the story of the capercaillie, Scotland's largest grouse and is strongly associated with the ancient Caledonian pinewoods.
The work first sets out with the derivation of the name before a describing the bird's extinction in the late 18th century and its reintroduction in the 1830s. Unlike several later attempts at reinforcement, this reintroduction was remarkably successful. The population expanded through the pine forests of the Highlands and gradually spread beyond its original reintroduction areas as far west as Argyll shire and south into Galloway.
The book also deals with its impact on its natural and human environment such as damage to forests and impact on grain harvests.
