    Renowned American artist and academic Ed Rossbach explores the history of the Paisley shawl and how it became the height of fashion across Europe during the late 19th century. 

     

    Viewing the Paisley shawl in the context of the industrial revolution, he explains how Paisley production reflected both the mechanical invention and innovation of that era and the handcraft skills that preceded it.

     

    The book is laid out in the following chapters:

    2. The Town - How the shawls happened to be woven there.

    3. The Weavers - And the cottages where they weaved.

    4. The Looms - The problem of handwoven vs machinewoven.

  • About the Author

    Ed Rossbach (1914 – 2002) was an American artist and academic with a specific interest in textiles and weaving. He was influenced by ethnic textiles and basketry and was renowned for combining modern materials like paper and plastics with ethnic weaving techniques. He was a Professor of Design at the University of California, Berkeley.

    Rossbach has work at the MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Smithsonian American Art Museum amongst others.
