Synopsis
The Isle of Mull, located off the west coast of Scotland, has a diverse and geologically significant landscape dominated by volcanic formations. It is best known for its extensive Paleogene volcanic rocks, formed around 60 million years ago during the North Atlantic Igneous Province's period of intense volcanic activity. These rocks primarily consist of basaltic lava flows, layered with tuffs and intrusions, particularly around the central area of Ben More, Mull’s highest peak and an extinct volcano.
Mull also features a prominent Caledonian basement, composed of older metamorphic and sedimentary rocks from the Dalradian Supergroup, which were later intruded by large granite plutons, such as the Loch Ba Ring Dyke Complex and the Glen More ring intrusion. The region's geological history is further shaped by glacial processes, which have sculpted the island’s rugged terrain, valleys, and sea lochs.
Notable geological sites include Fingal’s Cave on Staffa, showcasing spectacular columnar basalt formations, and Loch na Keal, where some of the best-preserved volcanic sequences and intrusive structures can be studied.
