Synopsis
Annie Bhán was an Irish traditional storyteller — a seanchaithe (plural seanchaithe), meaning a traditional Gaelic oral historian and teller of lore. In Irish culture, seanchaithe were custodians of stories, myths, local history, and traditional knowledge passed down orally rather than in writing
Annie Bhán’s repertoire of tales and oral lore was recorded and preserved in the early 20th century by folklore collectors. These stories provide insight into the oral tradition of the Irish-speaking Gaeltacht, particularly in County Donegal (the Irish-speaking northwest).
This bilingual book titled Seanchas Annie Bhán / The Lore of Annie Bhán was published in the 1997 and contains collections of her stories in Irish with English translation and commentary by the renowned Celtic Scholar Gordon Wallace MacLennan(1931-1992).
