  • Synopsis

Berneray(Gàidhlig: Beàrnaraigh na Hearadh) is an island and community in the Sound of Harris in the Outer Hebrides and is linked to  North Uist (Gàidhlig: Uibhist a Tuath) via a causeway.

Anyone who has taken the ferry from South Harris to Berneray will have marvelled at the many islands and rocks the boat has to navigate between on its short route.  In the late 1980s the author, aware that many of the locals with an intimate knowledge of the rocks, skerries, shoals and islands around the Island were aging with many into their 90s, decided he would undertake to record  the origin of the Gaelic and Norse names in order to preserve for future generations. He outlines his aims and his own personal knowledge of the area in his introduction before dealing with each name in alphabetical order. The book also has 3 Appendices: 1: The words for three local Gaelic songs; two by Hector Mackinnon and another by Archibald MacLeod. 2: facsimile of the Gaelic text for the story of Scolaid na-h-Eala(English: Fairway of the Swan). 3: Some additional notes to the "Grianam Case" centred around the ownership of the Isle of Grianam.
