Synopsis
Scottish Art flourished in the late 19th and early 20th century - the Glasgow School, the Scottish Colourists and "The Four" (Charles Rennie Mackintosh, James Herbert MacNair, Margaret Macdonald, and Frances Macdonald) assimilated the aims of Impressionism and Art Nouveau to produce paintings with a wide imaginative range and a highly original character. The author attempts to show that Scotland was never an artistic backwater.
