Synopsis
The Vestiarium Scoticum published in 1842 written by two brothers John Sobieski Stuart and Charles Stuart. The authors claimed the book to be based on 16th century documents in their possession and which they claimed provided the important elements and descriptions of dozens of tartans. With a public eager to wear authenticated tartan wear and a trade eager to sell the book became the authenticated and respected tartan authority.
The book was always considered controversial and unauthenticated and this book by Donald C. Stewart, the son of Donald William Stewart (who was the author of Old and Rare Scottish Tartans published in 1893) and the American J. Charles Thompson set out to prove The Vestiarium Scoticum to be a complete forgery.
