John Young was born into the agricultural class in Milton of Campsie in what was then Stirlingshire in 1825. His parents then moved to the north-west corner of Glasgow. He worked at several trades - blacksmith and boiler-maker. However after some personal disasters he ended up in the poor house from where he decided to self-educate himself and to write poetry his first book "Lays from the poorhouse" being published in 1860.
