  • Synopsis

Mike McCartney was commissioned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise to make a photographic record of the North Highlands to  highlight the area's beauty and diversity as a place in which to live, work and to visit.

In January 2009 Mike McCartney’s North Highlands exhibition opened at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. After that it went to the ArtDeCaf in Glasgow, and then on tour in Scotland as part of the Year Of Homecoming celebrations.

The book contains textual contributions from King Charles III (then HRH The Prince Charles) and Scottish comedian Billy Connolly.

  • About the Author

Mike McCartney is the youngest brother of the former Beatle bassist Paul McCartney.

Like his brother he originally started his career as a Musician and to establish his own identity separate from his famous brother, he adopted the stage name "Mike McGear." As McGear, he co-founded the satirical music and poetry group The Scaffold, alongside Roger McGough and John Gorman. The group achieved notable success in the UK during the late 1960s, with hits like "Lily the Pink" reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1968.

Parallel to his musical endeavors, McCartney maintained a passion for photography, a pursuit he began in his teenage years. Nicknamed "Flash Harry" by Beatles manager Brian Epstein for his constant use of a flashgun, McCartney documented the rise of The Beatles and the vibrant Liverpool scene of the 1960s

His photographic work has been exhibited internationally, including at the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Notable publications of his photography include Mike McCartney's Liverpool Life and Mike McCartney's Early Liverpool, which offer intimate glimpses into the cultural milieu of the time.

In 2005, McCartney contributed the cover photograph for Paul McCartney's solo album Chaos and Creation in the Backyard. He also released a limited edition book featuring candid backstage photographs from the Live8 concerts in 2008
