Synopsis
Atholl, near the town of Pitlochry in Perth and Kinross (old Perthshire), is famed for its rugged mountains, ancient forests, Blair Castle, and deep-rooted clan heritage in Scotland’s historic heartland. The lands of the Atholl's are situated at the point where historically the Scottish Lowland culture collides with the culture of the Gàidhealtachd (Gaelic Scotland).
The author Dr Leneman was allowed access to the estate papers and letterbooks in Blair Castle (the official seat of the Dukes of Atholl) and combined these with local parish sources to build up a picture of a people clinging to a Gaelic culture as anglicisation from the lowlands arrived.
She examines the dynamics between the Dukes and their tenantry as well as the fundamentals of how commerce and education were established with chapters on Coal and linen as well as crime and punishment.
The final chapter provides an essay on the effect on the estates of the 1715 and 45 Jacobite Risings with a list of the names of all the men who joined the side of the Rebellion and where they were killed.
