Synopsis
James Hedderwick, LL.D., of Rockland, East Clyde Street, Glasgow was best known for owning the paper "Weekly Citizen" which in 1864 he turned into the "Evening Citizen," the city’s first evening paper, on sale at half a pence.
He published “Lays of Middle Age” in 1859 which was republished in 1889 (this edition). The work comprises a thought provoking series of 55 short poems, often referred to as his "criticism of life."
The author's signature appears on spare page opposite Title Page after a gifting message to Mr. Henry Johnstone of the "Glasgow Ballad Club" dated Jan. 18th 1890.
The book also contains drawings by the Scottish Artist David Gauld (1865-1936) known as one the "Glasgow Boys Group" of artists.
Condition Notes
A very unusual binding in suede leather which is in very good condition with debossed black titles on the front. The author's signature appears after gifting message to Mr. Henry Johnstone of the "Glasgow Ballad Club"
