Synopsis
James David Forbes (1809–1868) was Professor of Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh University and was one of eth Victorian era's best known physicists.
This book deals exclusively with his contribution to glaciology and uses not only his extensive publications but also his voluminous correspondence and field notebooks not previously researched.
Forbe's glaciological work extended over ten years to August 1851 only terminated by serious illness which left him physically diminished during the remaining 17 years of his life.
The author Frank Cunningham in this book attempts to restore Forbes to his rightful place as one of the founding fathers and even the leading pioneer of the science of glaciology.
