James Bridie and his Theatre

James Bridie was the pen name of Osborne Henry Mavor, a Glasgow-born physician, playwright and influential figure in Scottish theatre. Born in 1888, he studied medicine at the University of Glasgow and served as a medical officer during the First World War before returning to medical practice. His first professionally produced play, The Sunlight Sonata, appeared in 1928, while The Anatomist (1930), based on Burke and Hare, established his reputation as a dramatist. Bridie became a full-time writer in 1938 and was instrumental in developing Scottish theatre. In 1943 he founded Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre and helped establish professional drama training in Scotland. He died in Edinburgh in 1951.

Written and published after his death this book is written in three sections: the first part is a biography of the "vivid personality" that was James Bridie; the second part is an appreciation of the entire volume of his plays interspersed with copies of significant correspondence between, playwright, critics and players and finally the third part deals with the important influence he had on the Scottish National Theatre movement and provides a valuable account of theatre in Scotland.
