  • Synopsis

A comprehensive social and local history of the Royal Burgh of Peebles.

Described by early 19th century commentators as a "finished town" but with the arrival of the Railways its beautiful valleys opened up  and the town attracted the interest of entrepreneurs from the border woollen trade eager to exploit the abundant water supply in the area. Peebles flourished as the Thorburn and Ballantyne Mills, with their reputation for fine cloths and tweeds became the "chief arteries" for a new economy and an expanded township.

With the end of Railway and a much reduced woolen industry Peebles redirected its efforts toward becoming a business conferencing centre and tourist destination.

The book is separated into the following parts:

Part I - 1850-1900: chapters on Industry, trade and commerce; The Burgh; Social Life
