Synopsis
This is a scarce copy of the 2nd edition of the work first published in 1884.
Curling is believed to have originated in Scotland in the early 1500s, with some of the earliest evidence coming from paintings by Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel and from actual stones with dates etched on them found in Scottish ponds.
The sport began on frozen lochs and ponds during the harsh Scottish winters. It was very much a community activity, with farmers and locals playing using stones from riverbeds, which varied in shape and size.
As it grew in popularity, Scotland started to develop more formal rules. In 1838, the Grand Caledonian Curling Club was established in Edinburgh — now known as the Royal Caledonian Curling Club (RCCC). This body became the sport’s first governing organization, responsible for standardizing rules and promoting curling globally.
Thanks to Scottish emigrants, curling spread to Canada, the U.S., Sweden, and beyond. Canada, especially, embraced the sport and now dominates much of the international curling scene.
In Scotland, curling has long been affectionately known as “The Roaring Game,” due to the sound the stone makes as it glides across the ice.
Condition Notes
This is an ex-library copy from the Biggar library with stamps on the title page and 1st page and the outline of the library stamp on the cover spine. However they are not detrimental to the quality of the work and in my view add to its historical authenticity.
The book itself is in good condition - the cover boards are somewhat faded both for the titles and the front guilded vignette (a curler in action) and there is general overall staining. There is a crease on the back board. The inside end papers are clean with a small, original bookseller plate (J. H. Wilson, Bookseller, Stationer and Printer, Biggar) on the bottom left corner of the front.
The book remains well bound and with good and clean pages throughout.
