Published to coincide with the opening of the Forth Road Bridge in 1964 and considered at the time to be the greatest civil engineering feat in the U.K. the author, Hugh Douglas sets out a history of the various successful and unsuccessful plans to to provide a convenient and swift crossing across the firth of forth and at the same time provide an important communication route between the Southern and Highland Scotland.

Over an 800 year period many ideas were conceived to facilitate the crossing - ferries, tunnels, floating bridges - some succeeding whilst others never making it past the simple drawing stage and often abandoned due to simple financing constraints.
