The book examines the historical, political, and legal steps that led to the Treaty of Union in 1707 between Scotland and England.

The Act of Union first by the Parliament of Scotland and then by the Parliament of England. This statute abolished the separate Parliaments and brought into existence the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and, from a legal point of view the United Kingdom of Great Britain. 

 

This book describes itself as, "not in strictness a work of history", but as "rather an attempt to comment upon the nature and the results of a great legal or political transaction". The book looks at the difficulties faced by the Scottish Parliament from 1603 when James VI of Scotland also became James I of England. The work goes onto review the positive and negative impacts of the Union, the acts of resistance by Scotland in 1715 and 1745, the preservation of a national identity in both Scotland and England and the preservation of a unique Scottish Legal system, Education system, and a Scottish Church.

Dicey, A. V. (Albert Venn), 1835-1922. An English legal and Constitutional Theorist and one of the first Professors of Law at the LSE Law School

Rait, Robert S. (Robert Sangster), 1874-1936. A Scottish historian, Historiographer Royal and Principal of the University of Glasgow.

 

This is an important work in the understanding of the constitutional ties that are the making of the United Kingdom.

 

The book is in fine condition with a strong binding and clean cover boards. Inside there are some pencil annotations/underlinings but otherwise the pages are bright and clean throughout with just age-related tanning.
