This is the story of the Clanranald Regiment during the Jacobite rising of 1745 and of the men of Arisaig, Canna, Eigg, Moidart and South Morar who sacrificed a way of life to aid Prince Charles Edward Stuart in a futile attempt to gain the throne of his father James.
The MacDonalds of Clanranald had fought and died before on behalf of the Stuarts, most notably during the campaigns of the Marquis of Montrose in 1645 and 46; under Viscount Dundee at Killiecrankie in 1689; and under Earl of Mar at Sherrifmuir in 1715. This final campaign on the 16th April 1746 ultimately resulted in the end of the clan system which had existed for centiries.
