Synopsis
Publisher's Synopsis:
This book surveys emigration from Scotland to North America during the second half of the 18th century. Day-to-day survival forced men, women and children from their homes in a country that was experiencing momentous economic and cultural changes. During the 17th century governments and individuals started to formulate policies for deliberate colonisation. The background of economic distress, political and religious harassment but intellectual ferment, led to the age of improvement. Improvements, though, were a mixed blessing, for they meant the upheaval of a people from their ancestral lands to move to the burgeoning industrial towns, or across the seas in a crowded boat to a land with a strange climate and vast forests from which they had to rest land and a living.
Throughout the history, the vast majority of people remain nameless, but where possible the authors have tried to follow individuals from their homes through their hazardous journeys to an uncertain future in North America.
Comments of the Scottish Landscape:
An important contribution to research on the movement of Scots and more notably the Gaelic population to the new colonies.
