  • Synopsis

This address by the Rev. David Guthrie was given on the 5th February 1936 to the Burns club of Laurencekirk situated in the Mearns in the County of Kincardine, the significance of which was this was just a stone throw from the farm of Clochnahill of which Burns' grandfather was a tenant.

The address begins with the farming background of the Burns family and reflects on Burns' own choice of farms in Ayrshire and states that he chose the picturesque over quality of the soil and which led to a failing tenancy.

The address goes on to deal with the Poet's Pride and his awareness of his greatness as well comparing his poverty as a poet to that of Dante in his financial failings.

He continues in his address with detailing Burns' grieving "at the hostility and suspicion that exists between man and man and between man and the lower creatures. Guthrie concludes his address discussing how Burns life could be considered a failure from a religious uplifting perspective  describing the poet as a "sufferer and not a conqueror."
