Synopsis
This revised and update 2nd edition homage to Scotland's and Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis (Gàidhlig: Beinn Nibheis), standing at 1,345m. The author of the first edition( 1986), leading pioneering climber Ken Crocket is joined as co-author by Simon Richardson for this new edition. Their intimate and expert knowledge of this iconic landmark is perhaps unrivalled. The 2nd edition is upgraded with additional and colour photography and a more readable font. Some of the text has been updated as well as references included in each section rather than all together at the end.
The book follows a chronological history from the commentaries of the earliest travellers and the early summit successes (1585-1865) leading into the mid-Victorian era of the growth of tourism and the "day of the climber" with the formation of The Scottish Mountaineering Club(1889). These initial 3 sections lead into the 20th century and book follows the chronology as follows:
3:The Observatory 1883-1904
4: Raeburn and Company 1896-1926
5: A New Hut, New Clubs (1924--1933)
6: The 1930s (1930-1939)
7: Constellations (1940-1949)
8: Renaissance (1950-1958)
9: The Pinnacle (1959-1960)
10: Of Whiskey and Other Matters
11: Consolidation (1961-1969)
12: Revolutions (1970-1985)
This 2nd Edition then includes 7 new sections:
13: Hard Route Consolidation (1986-1995)
14: Mixed Revolution (1996-2000)
15: Summer Rock (1986-2007)
16: The End of an Era (2001-2002)
17: Mixed to the Future (2003-2006)
18: The New Generation (2007)
19: Full Confidence (2007-2008)
The book concludes with an explanation of the Gaelic Place names, a technical essay on the Geology of the mountain(re-written from the 1st edition by Noel Williams), Graham Little's updates on the latest mapping and finally a completely revised section on the area's natural history.
