Synopsis
Ben Dòrain is a striking Munro in the western Highlands of Scotland, rising to 1,076 metres (3,530 ft) near the head of Strath Orchy. It sits close to the A82 between Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy and is easily recognised by its long, elegant ridge profile.
The mountain is best known for its strong literary associations. It was celebrated by Donnchadh Bàn Mac an t-Saoir (Duncan Ban MacIntyre), one of the great Gaelic poets of the 18th century, whose famous poem Moladh Beinn Dòrain (“Praise of Ben Dòrain”) evokes the mountain’s wildlife, seasons, and natural beauty.
Garry MacKenzie use MacIntyre's original poem as the basis for a new poem to create what he describes as "a new, multifaceted, ecological poem" more akin to a creative conversation with the original rather than a simple translation.
