The author Alasdair Alpin MacGregor was a prolific writer on Scotland in the first half of the 20th century. He had a profound interest in Scotland's Hebridean Islands. This was the author's first publication which he dedicated to his friend the writer Neil Munro.
The book comprises sketches about Hebridean Pirates, the fords of Uist, Peat gathering, the Macleods of Raasay, Highland superstitions, Dunvegan and a description of inside a typical Hebridean home.
There are 27 black and white plate illustrations by the author.

Alasdair Alpin MacGregor (1899–1970) was a Scottish writer, photographer, and folklorist known for his works on Scottish landscapes, history, and Gaelic culture. Born in Tain, Ross-shire, he had a deep love for the Highlands and Islands, which he captured in both words and photographs. His books, such as The Peat-Fire Flame and The Western Isles, focus on Scottish folklore, traditions, and remote communities. MacGregor was also a keen traveler, documenting Scotland’s rural life at a time of great change. His evocative style and passion for preserving Scotland’s heritage make him a significant figure in 20th-century Scottish literature.

A fine copy of this scarce 1st edition with a photocopy of an original for a dustcover- we should assume that a previous owner made a copy of the original due to its deteriorating state. It is extremely rare to find a copy with an original dustcover so even a photocopy version adds authenticity to the book. Inside the pages are bright and clean throughout.
