About the Author
John T. Reid (1823–1904)
John T. Reid (1823-1904) was a Scottish Victorian painter best known for his genre scenes and literary subjects, many of them inspired by the works of Robert Burns. Born in Aberdeen in 1823, Reid showed artistic promise early in life and initially trained as a decorative painter before pursuing fine art more seriously.
He studied in Edinburgh and later in London, where he was influenced by the narrative and anecdotal style popular in mid-nineteenth-century British art. Reid exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy of Arts, gaining a reputation for carefully composed historical and literary scenes.
