Synopsis
The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) was established in 1908 by Royal Warrant to create a permanent record of Scotland’s built heritage — its ancient monuments, archaeological sites, and historic buildings. Its founding reflected a growing national awareness of the need to preserve knowledge of the country’s cultural and architectural legacy, particularly as industrialisation, urban expansion, and agricultural change threatened to erase traces of the past.
At its core, RCAHMS served as Scotland’s national body for surveying, recording, and interpreting the physical remains of human activity across the landscape. Its primary duty was to identify and document sites of historical and archaeological importance, ranging from prehistoric stone circles and Iron Age brochs to medieval castles, churches, farmsteads, and later industrial structures. The Commission’s work aimed not only to preserve knowledge through documentation but also to advise on protection and conservation measures, ensuring that key monuments were safeguarded for future generations.
