  • Synopsis

This book was the first volume in a larger series documenting the vertebrate animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes) of different Scottish regions. It focuses on the far northern mainland of Scotland — specifically the counties of Sutherland, Caithness and West Cromarty — describing the distribution, habits, and occurrence of vertebrate species there.

The authors begin with physical and geographical descriptions of the region, then move into detailed accounts of the vertebrate fauna based on their observations and collections. The work includes illustrations, folding map and plates to support the text.
