Synopsis
The author in his preface acknowledges the work of Sir Walter Scott's "Minstrelsy of The Scottish Borders" an historical collection of ballads and songs compiled in the early 19th century as an important work recording the legends and traditions of the Borders but claims that his new history, using the results of recent historical and antiquarian research, provides an updated critical approach to the history of the borderlands.
From prehistoric times through Roman occupation, the Douglases, Flodden, the Union of the crowns the author reflects on how the major shits in the balance of power played out in the Borderlands.
